Edward Kelly Suffers First Defeat in His ONE Fighting Championship Debut

Mixed martial arts featherweight prospect Edward Kelly failed to win his first fight in the ONE Fighting Championship when he got submitted by Brazil's Herbert Burns in the first round. Fighting in front of mostly Filipino MMA fans at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last night, Burns made quick work of Kelly early on in the fight. With Kelly backpedaling, Burns threw and missed with a high kick causing him to slip to the ground.

With his opponent seemingly helpless on the ground, Kelly pounced on Burns which he is probably regretting by now as it marked the beginning of the end of the fight. Burns quickly grabbed hold of Kelly's legs, pulled him to the ground, got on his back, wrapped his arms around his neck and secured the submission win. Kelly tapped out at the 0:44 mark.

Going into the fight, Kelly was the favorite to win and for several reasons. One, he is more experienced with 5 fights in his resume compared to Burns' 1. And two, Burns was a replacement opponent who accepted to fight Kelly at very short notice. However, all these didn't seem to matter as Kelly wasn't able to ward off the Brazilian's jiu jitsu onslaught.

Kelly was supposed to fight Major Overall but Overall was taken off the card at the last minute. This has probably affected Kelly's performance last night as he fought a guy he didn't train for. Kelly and his team trained for Overall but they ended up fighting a different opponent. Last minute changes like this often have significant effects on how a fighter performs come fight night.

This is Kelly's first professional loss in six fights. Kelly is the younger brother of Eric Kelly, also an MMA fighter who just came off a dominant submission win over China's Jianbo Lu last month in the URCC. Eric was on Edward's corner last night to support his younger brother.
