What is Cordillera Day?

Last April, the region celebrated a Cordillera day. For this month of July, the region is yet again celebrating another Cordillera Day. This is getting a lot of people confused. Well, you can say that we have two Cordillera Days. It depends on which one you prefer to celebrate.

Some people celebrate Cordillera Day on April 24. This was the day that the Kalinga leader Macliing Dulag was killed by government soldiers for his efforts in opposing the Chico Dam project that would have displaced a lot of indigenous communities. The killing happened in 1980.

For those who celebrate Cordillera Day in July 15, the day commemorates the creation of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) which happened on July 15, 1987 (26 years ago). The CAR was created through an executive order signed by then Philippine President Corazon Aquino.

Whichever one you prefer to commemorate,  happy Cordillera Day to you! Matago-tago tako am-in!
