Mayor of Luna, Apayao Perishes in Road Mishap

The Mayor of the town of Luna in Apayao and her four companions were on their way back home after attending a seminar in Baguio City when their van figured in an accident in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. Mayor Betty Verzola and her bodyguard Marlon Taclibon died because of the accident. Three others were injured. They are Josephine Bangsil (Luna Vice Mayor), Millette Agustin (Luna municipal planning and development officer), and Benito Ildefonso, the van driver.

The accident happened sometime between 1 and 2 A.M. last Saturday (June 22, 2013). According to reports, the accident was caused by a calf which suddenly appeared on the road. The car hit the calf then swerved and crashed into a rice field. Taclibon died on the spot. The other four were rushed to the Bangui district hospital but Mayor Verzola was pronounced dead on arrival. The three survivors were then transferred to the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital.

Mayor Verzola was 65 years old.
